Food Sharing Bonds

In this excessively busy disconnected world that we live in it is easy to forget to eat, eat alone and on the run or eat a quick meal of ingredients prepped by someone else. This disregard for the source of our meals and the way in which they are prepared has created a huge gap in the social and familial networks of our society. Not to mention the lack of connection to the sources and quality of the foods we consume.

I have been aware of the importance of sharing food with others since my college days when we would start with three of us (roommates) making plans for a meal and before you knew it, we had invited thirty friends to stop by for a pot luck. It was a natural event that happened spontaneously through one random phone call that led to one person and then another being invited, who then in turn brought a friend.We always prepared homemade meals for these pot lucks and often the ingredients were picked fresh from our garden. It was natural to share food and the joys and sorrows of our lives during our time together.

This experience is one Ofer and I looked for when buying a house in a suburban neighborhood. We’ve found, though, that this was a tradition that didn’t easily follow in the environment of the busy Bay Area. Once children are born and with both parents working or divorced parents trading the kids back and forth, neighborhood kids attending different schools, there isn’t time left for a shared, home-cooked meal, much less gathering with families in the neighborhood. Food is the first activity that gets compromised. Everything else, track team, dance lessons, banking, birthday parties or whatever, comes before the time it takes to prepare and enjoy a quality meal.

Since we were unable to create a neighborhood experience, we kept a commitment to our immediate family to have meals together every day. That meant (since we work at home) that we have eaten meals at least once a day as a family and often two or three times a day for almost thirty years. What are the benefits we received from that practice? So many it’s amazing! Meal time is the natural time for family members to talk about their day, what’s happened or going to happen and how we feel about our lives. It creates an opportunity to speak about topics of concern or interest, in a relaxed way as we enjoy the nutritious, fresh food on the plate.

The preparation is equally important. We all cook and have welcomed our son, Yo’el, in the kitchen from a very young age. I can remember him being three years old and standing on a stepping stool at the counter, learning how to cut with a sharp knife. When he was nine and taking cooking classes through the recreation department, it was way below his skill level. They didn’t trust him to be able to use a sharp knife, event though he had been practicing for years, so it was a disappointment. Cooking is a life skill that is best developed in the young. What more valuable tool to have in life other than the ability to feed yourself well?

Food preparation is an intimate experience of creativity. It begins with the idea of eating a meal. What are we in the mood for? Can we find something that will satisfy all of us? We discuss possibilities, sometimes starting with one ingredient and expanding from there or perhaps a style of cooking (cold, hot, soup, pasta, fish, vegetables, Thai, Mexican, American, etc.). We might wander around the garden and see what is available during

the current season to supplement our meal. Then, we might pull out some recipes or create our own through our knowledge of flavors. We taste, smell, look, stir, chop, bake, broil and boil. Is there a drink you’d like to have with that? If so, what would be tasty alongside the meal we’re planning? Dessert? This can be a fun process that spans over many years, coming back to favorites and developing new recipes as we go along.

Friendship and community are bonds that get created naturally through an interest in preparing and sharing meals. We’ve recently met a young couple, Rain and Megan, and within a week of knowing each other have already developed a surprising bond among us through our enthusiastic discussions about food and gardening. Sharing a taste of something that we made, or discussing the process of making a food, discovering new ways to prepare something familiar or considering what to grow in the garden for eating later have given us a foundation of relationship that will only deepen over time. Gradually, the conversation will naturally become more personal as we learn to know and trust each other through the world of food sharing.

Chaotic Spring

The spring is bursting forth and the energy of the Chinese New Year of the Rooster is also taking hold! The first blush of spring is often exciting and exhilarating for me. I love to wander around the garden and see the little leaves coming up through the ground. The first blooms of the year are always special to me – narcissus, snowdrops and other bulbs begin quite early in California.

As the yard gets filled with life, especially after a wet winter like this year’s, the greenery grows quickly. Before I know it the entire garden is covered with all kinds of grasses, native sweet peas, edibles like mallow and mustard and the pussy willow shows its soft gifts. Flowers begin to reveal themselves shortly after. Peach and pear tree blossoms, freesias, daffodils, tulips, and sweet peas all start their beautiful performance.

When I get too caught up in the energy of spring, I feel overwhelmed and life is chaotic. There is so much growth and potential during spring that it can be hard to know what to embrace and what to save for later. I already have grasses going to seed so I won’t manage (again this year) to pull them before they spread their seeds. Consider what life would be like if we welcomed the seeds and saw them as an expression of abundance. Every year, I practice looking at my enthusiastic garden as a sign of success. It’s effervescence is titillating as I absorb the energy it is putting out into me and my surroundings. Part of my practice is to spend time in the garden without seeing it as work. Instead, I consciously absorb all of the GREEN – a color that fills me with hope and then, I breathe deeply…

The idea of getting rid of all these happy plants before they can reproduce is an influence of our “control and dominate life” culture. The feeling of overwhelm comes from the need to control every aspect of our lives. When I let go and listen inside to what section to take care of first, I am at peace and enjoy the process of putting my hands in the soil and gently lifting out the plants I don’t want (also known as weeding).

I asked an herbalist about the huge amount of Cleavers that I have growing in my garden every year. Her perspective is that the herbs grow more when we need them and less when we don’t. So, I guess, the herbs are telling me I need to cleanse more – a tough request for a foodie like me! I use the Cleavers in my spring teas along with a variety of other herbs that nourish me.  The flavors of these plants is satisfying. I can feel myself steeping in the life enhancing properties that they carry.

Here’s a favorite recipe that you can enjoy to take advantage of the lovely wild greens.

30 leaves of mustard greens and mallow leaves

You can use other greens for this recipe (kale, chard, broccoli). If the center ribs are thick, be sure to remove them first.



2 Tbsp. olive oil

2 Tbsp. Basil vinegar

2 Tbsp. nutritional yeast

1 Tbsp. oregano

Unbaked greens

1 tsp. marjoram

½ tsp. cayenne

1 tsp. seasalt or to taste

  1. Preheat the oven to 300ᵒ.
  2. If necessary, gently rinse the leaves and spin dry. Pour oil and vinegar in a large bowl. Whisk thoroughly to mix.
  3. Add the leaves and mix gently with your hands or a spatula until leaves are coated.
  4. Add the spices and repeat mixing.
  5. On a large baking sheet, lay a layer of parchment paper.
  6. Lay leaves individually onto the paper as flat as possible. A little overlap is okay, but keep it to a minimum.
  7. Bake for 15 minutes. Remove from oven.
  8. When cool enough to touch, store chips in a paper towel lined large plastic container so they can lay flat.
  9. Repeat steps 7, 8 and 9 until leaves are finished baking.

Colors of Winter

The gray days of winter bring a feeling of melancholy for some and of inner solitude for others. As a photographer and an observer of nature, I find that the gray provides an excellent background as colors pop out from the landscape. In pondering this idea recently, I found myself discovering that this is a lovely metaphor for life. Many of us go through life with the intention of having only “sunny days”. We are searching endlessly for ways to make our lives “happy”.


Yet, the richest lives are experienced through the contrast of “rainy days” and “sunshine”. Without the darker hours in our lives, the brighter ones would become pale and ordinary, overexposed. Think about what it is like during drought conditions. What started out as a glorious celebration of warmth turns into the starkness of excess. The excess heat, dries everything out resulting in lack. Everything contracts and holds onto even the smallest bit of moisture.

When the winter rains finally arrive, there is a sigh of relief. The dry, packed soil expands to receive the rains when they arrive. At first, the soil drinks the rain in greedily, absorbing the water into its grains. As the downpour continues, though, the ground becomes full, and ultimately, overflows.

When we experience the deepest letting go, it can be like a flood that overtakes us. At first it feels overwhelming and frightening. To fully surrender we need to open and expand, so the old patterns are washed away and gradually calm returns. Then, we can put together the pieces that are left into a new way of being.

Surrender is a valuable place to be inside oneself. This mindset comes in our darkest moments, when the skies are so densely covered we are unable to see any light. In those moments, letting go of expectation and control, true surrender allows through the rays of hope and sunshine.

When we step from the “dark into the light” the glow of such brightness can blind us making it hard to see what is next. This is the second element of surrender that many don’t recognize. The first step is to let go of the current place. The second is to step forward without knowing that there is stable footing. Each of these steps requires courage and the willingness to be in the unknown.


Nature gives us inspiration for these moments. When our eyes open we can see the brightness of the contrasting colors of fall leaves against the misty, gray winter sky. The rushing flow of the water surging between the banks is empowering to behold. We are beings of contrast, a part of the natural world; all aspects to be fully embraced in honor of our true nature.

The year is coming to a close and it has been a year filled with surprises – joy, sorrow and uncertainty. As we move forward into the coming year remember that the fire is bringing us warmth in the cold days ahead, cooking food for our enjoyment and nourishment, bringing light into our surroundings.




The fire will burn away old fears and limitations, stimulating the new growth that is hiding under the ashes. So, toss into the flames all of your worries and doubts. Take a few minutes to fully release the old, watch as it burns away, feel the release inside of you as you meditate on the flickering flames of inspiration.







Now, step into the New Year filled with hope and joy for the transformation that awaits you!

Garden Gratitude

The warmth of the sun’s gentle rays are caressing my chest. Suddenly, there is a breeze and I hear the leaves rustling, falling from the nearby trees. I feel the cool air gliding across my face.  The sun disappears behind a passing cloud and for an undefined moment. The wind feels chillier and I am filled with a feeling of potential, awaiting the unknown.


fall front leavesWhat will happen next? I can smell the scent of rain in the air around me. A gust of wind blows through completely eliminating the light of the sun as it brings a bank of clouds above me. I am in the dark. I can feel the fullness of the clouds and wonder will I soon be standing in a downpour? Then, a small pitter, patter as the raindrops begin to fall lightly. They are so gentle that I am as yet uncertain as to their actual presence. Was that another leaf falling or is it beginning to rain?


The drops slowly increase in size and speed, still falling gently. I continue to stand silently, trusting the raindrops to wash away my fears.  I go to a place inside myself that is safe and lovingly held by Mother Nature. As my trust deepens, there is a gradual decrease in the sensation of water falling on and around me. In time, I can begin to perceive a hint of sunshine glowing through the clouds.


Hope LS024I am filled with hope as another breeze urges the clouds to move to another place; to share the wealth of their rain with someone else. The sun bursts out and once again I am embraced by the sun’s rays.  The sunshine warms the top of my head, spilling over onto my shoulders and back.  I open up to receive these blessings of nature. I am contented and peaceful.

I open my eyes. Thank you Garden. I am grateful for all you give me.

Earthquakes Felt Internally

In California, I often feel that this time of year there is an imminent threat of earthquakes. I don’t know if there is any science behind this. I just have a feeling when the ground is dry, the potential for fire is high, and there is a lot of smog in the air from a lack of wind and rain during the summer months. I feel an uneasiness during this time, as though I am waiting for something to happen. As soon as the first rains appear – like they did last week a full two weeks ahead of their usual Halloween appearance – some sort of pressure is released and the potential for the earthquakes dies down.

This experience of uneasiness and uncertainty is heightened this year by the tumultuous political season we are having in this country. It is always reflected by the qualities of fall/autumn as the season for letting go, grieving the old to make space for what is coming next.

What is an earthquake and how do we feel them internally? Oxford dictionary defines an earthquake as “A sudden and violent shaking of the ground, sometimes causing great destruction, as a result of movements within the earth’s crust or volcanic action.” Let’s break this down and look at it piece by piece.



Sudden and violent shaking of the ground – Translation: “My self identity has been shaken to the core.” I know when I have a big shift inside of myself, sometimes triggered by an external event and sometimes not, it feels sudden and can be expressed through an uncontrolled physical shaking, sometimes to the point of extreme. The causes are numerous, maybe I got a piece of bad news (even good news can cause this response!), I’ve taken an action that is out of character for me and required guts to perform, I’ve let go of something old and deep that I carried around for years, I’ve narrowly missed an accident or injury, I’ve faced someone or something that has threatened me in the past, etc.

Sometimes causing great destructionIn order for change to occur, I need to go through a phase of breaking down, destroying the old pattern to make room for the new. When I avoid change or ignore my feelings and the signals that something is brewing inside of me, there is a build up of tension internally that will eventually burst forth like a volcano erupting or an earthquake releasing pressure. I’ve found that this is the state of mind that moves me to pick fights, have accidents in the kitchen or when moving through the day, feeling agitated and unsettled. When the earthquake hits from this vantage point, it can cause great damage – to myself, and those around me.

As a result of movements within… – It is our nature to have perpetual change (Change is defined by as – “a. To cause to be different. b. To give a completely different form or appearance to; transform.”) Movement is “a change of position” that in turn results in something new; a different expression appears than what existed before through moving your perspective on life and taking new actions to reflect that change. Movement can be felt in our emotions (insight, release, completion), through the energy body and the flow of energy in the meridians, by observing the seasons as they continually transform from one phase of life to another and repeat.

In order to move gracefully through the ongoing changes in life, it is helpful to be conscious of the continual destruction and renewal of the self, just like I see in the garden each year. When I fashion myself after that movement through the seasons, I am more readily able to feel peaceful about what is happening, even when I am in the midst of a personal conflict. Studying the inherent qualities of movement and change that are nature’s “nature” gives me strength and perseverance, compassion and awe for the cycles within all of life.

Let It Flow

So I’ve been having a lot more contact with the 20 something generation lately (to my delight!) and I’m finding an interesting thought brought about by the way that they use language. I find it fascinating how each generation uses language differently. I had an email in which there was a comment by my friend that she could get together “when it flows”. That, in turn, got me thinking about the way that this phrase came about during my generation’s self-discovery period and remembered that it was related to not holding on to grudges and allowing emotion to flow freely (i.e. free love).







8_prThis idea of flowing has morphed into a new meaning over the years – first it became about letting go of the past and all the burdens associated with it, then it was about being flexible in life, mind and body and now, it has moved into the language in such a way as it refers to a way of being in daily life.

Hmmm, interesting. As I pondered the idea that I offer a time to meet “when it flows” I realized that this could be (if taken literally) quite a challenge. The essence of the word flow suggests movement, not being static or still. So, in order to find a time to meet, we would need to actually create a time that would not flow, but in fact, remain constant. The good news is that the languaging didn’t become an actual obstacle (this time) to our success. The fact remains that words are very important in our communications, both internally and externally.

Then, I was watering in the garden and another concept of flow struck me. I had just replaced my old watering wand with a new one. I was observing how the flow of the water from the new wand was strong, open and clear. It took me less time to water with this wand than it did with the old one, though I hadn’t been aware that the old one was so inefficient as the water flowed out of it easily when it was turned on. One of the features of a watering wand is to keep the spout open so the water can flow continuously. There are many settings as to the way in which the water flows (spray, tilt, soak, mist, jet, shower) and is a clear indication that there are many qualities to water and the idea of flowing. These different settings give a variety of effects. So, what would happen if it got stuck on flowing continuously?

hidden-falls-emailtropical-beauty-emailSo, think about it. When the water flows well, it gives the plants the amount of water that they can use. When the water flows too strongly, it can damage the plants or flood them, making for numerous problems. When the water doesn’t flow enough, the plants don’t receive a sufficient amount for them to grow well and flourish.

To bring this into our lives as human beings, it is one thing for life to feel like it is flowing smoothly – activities and opportunities are coming our way in a fashion that we can readily respond to in a comfortable manner. Or, life is flooding us like a raging river with excessive amounts of information and requirements that we are unable to effectively respond to – overwhelm and paralysis often resulting.

Do I ignore the signs of stress that build up in me when my flow doesn’t match those around me and allow myself to get tumbled down the river  bumping into the rocks along the way? Or do I slow down in the flow of my life to find the stillness of the peaceful stream, look and feel closely the undercurrents that are swimming in my subconscious and make a decision for action from there.

Give it a try and see how much your swim through life will improve.

Plant Circles

We have this plant. We don’t know what kind it is. At first we thought it was in the aloe family, but people have told us it’s not. Then, we thought maybe it was an agave. But, honestly, we don’t really know. The story of this mystery plant is a story of life. The cycles and unexpected beauty and magnificence that are revealed.

P1010082This plant was given to us as a gift. I planted it in an area of the garden that was insignificant at the time. I also planted some aloe vera plants nearby. As I watched the plant grow, I was amazed by its beauty. And its size. The way that its leaves seem solid and floating at the same time.

Eventually, we dug a shallow pond next to it. At first, it seemed like a strange place, the two of them, next to each other. But as time has passed, I’ve become accustomed to it. Then, in the spring, we saw the beginnings of a stalk growing out of the center of the plant. We watched with awe as it grew and grew and grew. We had heard that these plants will grow the stalk and then die, like an agave does. But, we hadn’t ever seen it happen.  In all the years we’ve had the plant, it just grew new leaves.


Over a period of weeks, it went from a tiny bud in the center of the plant to a stalk 17 feet high and 3 inches around.






P4150009P4150010Then….it began to bloom. Wow, what an incredible sight. These delicate yellow flowers slowly opening up the stalk. Beginning at the edge closest to the plant base and gradually working its way up the spine of the stalk, one section at a time, blooming yellow flowers.







 P8250001_prMany weeks passed as the stalk would bloom in one section, then die back and bloom in another section. I thought the show was over when it flowered. So, I stopped watching the plant as closely as the year began to speed up and I became unusually busy with my life.

Slowly, the leaves began to wither and yellow. Now they look as though they are almost dead. Then, to my surprise, Ofer showed me a tiny succulent in his hand. He had picked it off of the stalk of this gorgeous plant. I went and saw that when I thought the show had ended, it was preparing a final hurrah!

P8040016Each of the flowers had turned into tiny plants. This plant, though dying, was also giving birth. As each month passed, the plant was putting all of its energy into creating the next generation in abundance.

I’m fascinated by the reflections of life this plant gives me. The full maturity of adulthood that is the apex of a life cycle culminates in the creation of new life. As women, we are at our most beautiful when we are full of the new life we are creating. Often, it is said, that the woman carrying a baby is glowing. I know from experience that the glow of life is fully manifest in both parents at the time of birthing the new baby.


And, then, even as we stand tall within ourselves, extending the stalk of our own accomplishments, our children are growing as well. The growth of our children reflects the stability of the stalk they grow from. Eventually, I imagine, the baby plants will fall from their mother stalk and take root beneath the leaves of the dying plant. I’ll have to wait and see if that is, indeed, the route they will take to future success.


Changing Weather Patterns

This summer the weather patterns have been jumping back and forth between exceptionally cool for the season and then unseasonably hot. It is a strange dance that has been occurring for a few years now. I find as a gardener that it is disconcerting that my plants are behaving in unusual ways due to this weather dance.

For example, I just harvested the prune plums that are normally ripe in September. The peaches are not ripe yet and those are usually ready before the prune plums. There was an abundant harvest of mulberries this year, but now there are some red ones that aren’t ripening at the usual speed as the weather is too cool for them to ripen normally. The basil I planted isn’t growing as prolifically as usual. My dry bean plants aren’t growing quickly enough to give me beans for the winter.

Everyone I speak to is experiencing a similar feeling of being buffeted around by the energy of this Fire Monkey year. We are influenced by a wide range of energetic pulses that surge throughout the universe. As a part of natural life, we feel those changes on deep levels within ourselves.

As these strange happenings occur, I find myself feeling uncertain what to do in the garden. Usually, I am eager to track the process of growth and ripening to the edible celebration of life. This year, I feel a bit disconnected from it all. The consistency over many years, even with the usual variations that come with gardening, provide for me a foundation and security that I had been unaware of previously. So, now that it is moving and changing, even more unpredictable than before, how do I enfold that quality into myself?

Certainly, some of this disconnect comes from the cottage building project that has been going on since spring. What an amazing thing to watch a building be built. Creative, chaotic, steady, excessive, abundant, meticulous, joyful anticipation. The feng shui of the property is changing indelibly. I imagine that, too, is having an effect on the garden and my relationship to it.

Some years ago, I explored the possibility of having a more productive urban farm. I called in an agriculture guy from the county and we discussed how I could plant the garden for producing higher yields. I also consulted with my farmer friend, Kristy Knoll of Knoll Farms in Brentwood. Kristy said to me, “Amy, you’re not a farmer. You don’t want to live the life of a farmer.” It took some time for this statement to sink in and over the years, I pull it forward again to remind myself that I am a gardener who is in love with nature; not a farmer who is devoted to providing a commercial product. How right she was!

Now, with the more obvious changes in the natural world, I am clear that I do not want to hold the responsibility of a farmer in these changeable times. I am indelibly grateful to the farmers who are taking this challenge as a sacred duty to discover how to keep up with what is happening. To keep providing us with sustenance is their commitment and it is a calling that is not honored deeply enough by the rest of us. I am aware every week when I shop at the Farmer’s Market of how grateful I am for their service. As a gardener, I have a feel for what they are doing for us. How harsh and inspiring their lives can be in equal measure!

I am a planter of seeds though. Not only do I plant in the soil, my calling is to plant seeds in the soul; to nurture the seeds inside myself and allow them to grow even during uncertain times. We can do this work together. I plant a seed in you, you water a seed in me. We water these seeds with our tears and give them sunshine through our joy. We harvest the results together.

Bees – A Sacred Service

Many of you have been reading lately about aggressive or Africanized bees. Just like any other living being, bees will protect their home and will get aggressive when they feel threatened. This is not something that happens often. Remember that there is a lot of hype in media and sensationalism sells. So much of what happens in the world is not directly related to your life. These bad news outlets are fueling fear to sell their materials.

Recently, I was in the garden with some students. We were having a meditation when a bee started to buzz around one of the students. She tried to maintain her internal calm and continue following the meditation. It was persistent, however, and since she is afraid of bees we ended up moving to a different place.

At the end of the day, when we had returned indoors for our closing circle, there was a bee flying around the head of the same woman. Again, she responded with fear. With my encouragement, she was able to calm down and see that she wasn’t actually in danger (if you are truly allergic to bees that’s another story). Her fear was disproportionate to the actual threat that the bee was to her. Even if she had been stung, it would not have done much damage; a minor discomfort – and death for the bee. When she could breathe deeply and see how tiny the bee was in relation to herself, she could also see that the bee’s life was actually in danger because it was stuck inside. We managed to catch the bee and release it back into the garden to do its job.

So, what happened? Well, we had received a new swarm of bees on the property only a few days before. They were adjusting quite nicely, but this one bee felt like we had gotten too close to the new hive. Some of them have been wandering and looking a bit lost. The bees will follow and protect their queen, so it takes time for them to feel safe in a new hive.

Remember what it feels like to be uprooted, trying to settle into a new home, unsure of yourself, frequently getting lost as you learn a new place, and wanting to protect yourself from the unknown in your new surroundings? That’s what the bees go through when they are captured and placed in a new hive.

When we step back away from fears that have been unnecessarily planted in our minds, we are able to look in wonder at the terrific design of the natural world. Bees are an important feature of that design and give us the food we eat. Without bees, and other insects, pollinating the plants, we would not have fruits and vegetables ripening on the vine. Bees perform a sacred service for humanity.

Years ago, we experienced that problem in our garden. At first, we couldn’t figure out why we weren’t getting any zuchinni. They would flower and then not produce the fruit. The same thing was happening with our tomatoes. Over a period of a few years, we realized that there were consistently fewer bees than before. So, we ended up getting bees for our property. For five years, Ofer managed the bees for us. After a difficult winter, the hive collapsed and he gave up on it.


Since that time, we have been looking for someone to have hives on our property. Our lovely neighbors, Vanda and Kellie, asked us if they could house some bees here so they can have enough honey for their new restaurant in San Francisco – Chicks and Love Pizza Patio. We get the benefit of having the bees pollinating for us and some delicious honey samples, too. Remember, the bees are not out to get you! They are a fascinating example of the proficient and awe-inspiring design of nature.
