Creativity with the Harvest

Autumn is clearly on its way. Dusk is arriving earlier each day. The change is perceivable if you stop for a moment and watch. In Chinese medicine, autumn is a time of clearing out the old and preparing for the next season. It is time to harvest that which has provided fruit and store them for future use during the harsh darkness of winter.

At Sugi Garden Kitchen, we like to be creative in the ways we preserve the foods we harvest. Sometimes, we eat them right up and other times the overwhelming abundance gets our creative juices flowing. Frequently, jalapeños are a fun flavor to play with. We mix them into a large variety of dishes to add a little spark.

Even those who don’t have a strong tolerance for spice enjoy the lovely flavor of the jalapeño pepper. One of the most recent recipes that we created with extra jalapeños is Crab Stick Salad.

When Yo’el and I were in Japan in 2019, we discovered a wonderful salad prepared with imitation crab. With our educated palates leading the way, we created an equally delicious version at home! Imitation crab is actually made from white fish, not crab. (If you are allergic to MSG, you will want to avoid these.)

You may already be familiar with our popular Jalapeño Garlic Lime Vinegar. This delicious vinegar can be used in a wide variety of ways. Fantastic in salads, on tacos, with pork recipes and more! All of our flavored vinegars (Thai Chili, Fig, Basil, Garlic Balsamic, Jalapeño Garlic Lime) bring a little zip to just about anything you’re cooking. It’s amazing what a little sprinkle of vinegar does for a meal!

Check out these SGK recipes to get started.

More can be found in our recipes section for experimenting with our other delicious products. Like Red Miso or Sun Dried Tomato Basil Pesto.

With the ongoing world situation, we are still unable to attend events. We are happy to provide safe, local pick up in Pleasant Hill for products you need to prepare the recipes we’ve provided for your enjoyment. Or, some items can be shipped. Please let us know what suits you best. Most of all, continue to create healthy, tasty meals to share with those around you!
